Day 172: Kolkata-Kharagpur

January 27, 2016Tomaz Humar

It’s 4 am. I finally completed boarding on the airplane. Shortly we should take off. Wrong, the pilot announced we are having some technical difficulties, and they need to check the plane. While they were fixing the airplane, two Indians started fighting. I had no energy left so I fell asleep. I woke up a few moments before landing. Upon landing, I had to wait for my bike, then had to go through immigration which took me 45 minutes. It was already late considering it gets dark at 5pm. At 9pm I was back on the bike, tired as hell. But now was not the time or place to complain! The first 2 kilometers cycled, I will never forget. I have probably seen more things in 10 minutes than in 172 days so far. Cold, dry, dusty atmosphere, terrible traffic… I got out of Kolkata on the highway, which was much better, less traffic. But the horns were so loud that I jumped every time I heard it. I’ve been to Nepal before and the border with India, so I knew what to expect, but I didn’t expect so bad living conditions. This is probably the poorest place I have ever been to. I also did not expect that buying water and rice would be such a problem here, but it is. You can buy water in only certain shops. I only got biscuits and cookies, and that’s it. Eating local foods here is simply too dangerous for me. Here is nothing, only flat fields, people are living in houses made from wood or mud bricks. There are no concrete buildings, I don’t feel very welcome here, everybody are staring weirdly at me all the time. The weather in India is tough, dry and hot. I had some problems finding a hotel, because everywhere I asked they said I should go some place else. At the end of the day I luckily got a room. I have no internet connection to check the route for tomorrow, so I guess I will be cycling blind until I get WiFi. Overall, good day!
